All our tents our lovely (of course!) and the layout of each one is exactly the same. The only real difference between them is that they each have their own colour scheme and each has its own dedicated bathing arrangements.
These are as follows:
Cae Solomon, Castroggi and The Park all have an enclosed shower unit placed immediately outside the tent.
The Coombe is allocated the Victorian style roll top bath in our glorious showerblock.
The Oakes, The Cribbau, Catta Dee and The Slades are each allocated a specific shower also in the showerblock.
To see where each tent is, we hope you find this map of the site useful.
Check in is between 4pm and 7pm. Please note however that although your tent will be ready at 4.00pm the communal spaces (Cheat’s Kitchen, Showerblock and Petro) may not be. We therefore ask that if you plan to arrive before 5.00pm you only use your own tent until 5.00pm. Thank you.
Check out is at 10am to accommodate the time needed for cleaning the site for our next guests.
Please ensure you have vacated your tent by 10am. We have a very rigorous cleaning procedure to work through before our next guests arrive and our cleaning team are not allowed to enter the tent until you have left so your adherence to this is much appreciated.
Our guests have always been wonderful about stripping their beds and taking their rubbish to the car park so please accept our thanks in advance.
If you are leaving at or around check out time then please:
If you are leaving very early in the morning or on a day which is not the normal changeover day please:
Sadly we do not accept dogs. Penhein is a working farm, with sheep, cattle and dogs of our own so we ask guests not to bring their dogs with them. Whilst we’re sure your dog is very well behaved at home, we simply cannot take the risk with our livestock. It may also be that other guests do not like dogs. We hope you understand and can happily put you in touch with our local kennels if required.
We want to keep the glampsite as peaceful as possible and we encourage our guests to switch off from daily life, get back to basics and enjoy spending time together. Therefore, there are no power points in our alachigh tents. However, we know that our guests sometimes have to keep in touch with the outside world, so there are electrical points in the communal tent and in the Cheat’s Kitchen for charging phones or plugging in electrical equipment. If you’d like to bring a hairdryer, there are also power outlets in the shower block.
There is no WiFi at the glampsite but most mobile networks cover the area, so you won’t be completely off grid!
Penhein is in a very rural location that is not served by local buses particularly well; the glampsite can only be reached via a mile-long private driveway. However, if you don’t have access to a car, there are some excellent local taxi services, many of whom offer mini buses for large groups.
Your best bet is to get the train to Newport, which is about 20 minutes away by car and has a good taxi service to take you to/from Penhein. Alternatively, you can get the train to Chepstow which is 15 minutes away, but local lines only.
Yes. We have several very good local taxi services, some with minibuses for groups. Please get in touch for details at enquiries@penhein.co.uk or + 44 (0) 1633 400581.
We don’t have a bike rack, however you can attach bikes to the fence in the car park (please bring your own locks) or keep your bike next to your tent. Penhein is quite remote, and the glampsite even more so, with very little traffic or unexpected visitors.
Cooking over the fire pit is great fun and we heartily recommend it. However, we know it’s not for everyone and doesn’t always go to plan, so there’s also a handy ‘Cheat’s Kitchen’ on the glampsite with a couple of hobs and a microwave. You can also cook on the wood-burning stove inside your tent. For more info about cooking at Penhein, click here.
There’s a large, custom-made cool chest in every alachigh tent with plenty of space for 2-3 days’ worth of food. They’re kept cool by frozen hot water bottles – simply change them over every morning and evening. (Reinforcements are kept in the freezer in the Cheat’s Kitchen).
We provide all the wood you will need for your stay, but we do suggest you bring some newspaper and matches to help you get the fire going. For a checklist of what to bring, click here.
Yes. Your alachigh tent is well stocked with everything we think you’ll need for cooking up a storm in the open air or inside your tent, including utensils, crockery, cutlery and store cupboard essentials. For a full list of what’s included, click here.
If you need a bit more room or a special entertainment space we have Petro, our tented communal area, and Chehel Sotoun our glorious indoor/outdoor space in the centre of the site. Both these areas have electricity.
If your numbers need it we can also arrange temporary additional bell tents, fully furnished and looking lovely.
If you would like further information on booking the whole site for a large group please visit Group Bookings
Our nearest pub is The Rock & Fountain in Penhow (a short drive) which serves good food, so we recommend booking in advance. There are lots of other good pubs within easy driving distance – you’ll find a list of our favourites on our Eating Out page. However, we recommend you ring anywhere you choose before going, to check they are able to accommodate you.
We offer a range of fun activities for guests so please check our list of Things To Do first! If you’d like to make your own arrangements, we are happy to discuss ideas, but please note that we’ll need to take into consideration any potential disturbance to our other guests, local wildlife, and the daily workings of the farm before making a decision.
