All our tents our lovely (of course!) and the layout of each one is exactly the same. The only real difference between them is that they each have their own colour scheme and each has its own dedicated bathing arrangements.
These are as follows:
Cae Solomon, Castroggi and The Park all have an enclosed shower unit placed immediately outside the tent.
The Coombe is allocated the Victorian style roll top bath in our glorious showerblock.
The Oakes, The Cribbau, Catta Dee and The Slades are each allocated a specific shower also in the showerblock.
To see where each tent is, we hope you find this map of the site useful.
Check in is from 4.00pm onwards. Please note however that although your tent will be ready at 4.00pm the communal spaces (Cheat’s Kitchen, Showerblock and Petro) may not be. We therefore ask that if you plan to arrive before 5.00pm you only use your own tent until 5.00pm. Thank you.
Check out is at 11.00am to accommodate the time needed for cleaning the site for our next guests.
Please ensure you have vacated your tent by 11.00am. We have a very rigorous cleaning procedure to work through before our next guests arrive and our cleaning team are not allowed to enter the tent until you have left so your adherence to this is much appreciated.
Our guests have always been wonderful about stripping their beds and taking their rubbish to the car park so please accept our thanks in advance.
If you are leaving at or around check out time then please:
If you are leaving very early in the morning or on a day which is not the normal changeover day please:
In the rush of packing up it is easy to leave things behind. So firstly we ask that you double check everywhere before you go. If, when you get home, you think you may have left something behind, let us know and we will check for you. If we find your item, we will return it by 2nd class post at a minimum charge of £10 (to cover admin, packing, postage and travel to the post office). If you want it delivered by alternative methods e.g. 1st class post, special delivery, recorded delivery, or the 2nd class postage cost exceeds £5, this will be charged at cost plus a £5.00 packaging and administration fee.
We ask that you pay the postage & packaging costs by BACS transfer or via your guest login before we post the item to you. We will only hold onto Lost Property for a maximum of 3 months from the date of your stay, after which we will donate it to a local charity shop.
We are happy to welcome up to two well behaved dogs per tent or, for a whole site booking, we will accept a maximum of six dogs. As we are a working farm, with livestock all around, we want all our guests to be comfortable – whether or not they are dog owners -which is why we ask for well behaved dogs only! Dogs must be kept on leads at all times when walking around the glampsite and farm and must not be left unattended in your tent. Please note, dogs should be included in your booking and are subject to a supplementary fee – they can be added later via your guest login if you didn’t add them at the point of booking. If you would like to know more about booking your pooch pal into Penhein with you, then send us an email on enquiries@penhein.co.uk and we can send you details.
As most dogs have their own particular set up, we don’t provide bowls or beds so you’ll need to bring these with you.
Yes, we charge a supplement of £25 per dog per stay. Please ensure your booking lists the dogs you want to bring and that you have read and agreed to our rules which are listed in the booking form or available upon request.
There are a multitude of places that welcome dogs close to Penhein. Wentwood Forest which adjoins Penhein Farm is over 1500 acres with many trails and is wonderful to explore with dogs as they may be let off the lead throughout the Forest. Many of the local pubs and restaurants welcome dogs, for example a very popular local restaurant is Ego which warmly welcomes dogs offering treats and water bowls.
We want to keep the glampsite as peaceful as possible and we encourage our guests to switch off from daily life, get back to basics and enjoy spending time together. Therefore, there are no power points in our alachigh tents. However, we know that our guests sometimes have to keep in touch with the outside world, so there are electrical points in the communal tent and in the Cheat’s Kitchen for charging phones or plugging in electrical equipment. If you’d like to bring a hairdryer, there are also power outlets in the shower block.
There is no WiFi at the glampsite but most mobile networks cover the area, so you won’t be completely off grid!
Penhein is in a very rural location that is not served by local buses particularly well; the glampsite can only be reached via a mile-long private driveway. However, if you don’t have access to a car, there are some excellent local taxi services, many of whom offer mini buses for large groups.
Your best bet is to get the train to Newport, which is about 20 minutes away by car and has a good taxi service to take you to/from Penhein. Alternatively, you can get the train to Chepstow which is 15 minutes away, but local lines only.
Yes. We have several very good local taxi services, some with minibuses for groups. Please get in touch for details at enquiries@penhein.co.uk or + 44 (0) 1633 400581.
We don’t have a bike rack on site. However you can attach bikes to the fence in the car park (please bring your own locks) or keep your bike next to your tent. Penhein is quite remote, and the glampsite even more so, with very little traffic or unexpected visitors.
Cooking over the fire pit is great fun and we heartily recommend it. However, we know it’s not for everyone and doesn’t always go to plan, so there’s also a handy ‘Cheat’s Kitchen’ on the glampsite with a couple of hobs and a microwave. You can also cook on the wood-burning stove inside your tent. For more info about cooking at Penhein, click here.
There’s a large, custom-made cool chest in every alachigh tent with plenty of space for 2-3 days’ worth of food. They’re kept cool by frozen hot water bottles – simply change them over every morning and evening. (Reinforcements are kept in the freezer in the Cheat’s Kitchen).
We provide all the wood you will need for your stay, but we do suggest you bring some newspaper and matches to help you get the fire going. For a checklist of what to bring, click here.
Yes. Your alachigh tent is well stocked with everything we think you’ll need for cooking up a storm in the open air or inside your tent, including utensils, crockery, cutlery and store cupboard essentials. For a full list of what’s included, click here.
If you need a bit more room or a special entertainment space we have Petro, our tented communal area, and Chehel Sotoun our glorious indoor/outdoor space in the centre of the site. Both these areas have electricity.
If your numbers need it we can also arrange temporary additional bell tents, fully furnished and looking lovely.
If you would like further information on booking the whole site for a large group please visit Group Bookings
Our nearest pub is The Rock & Fountain in Penhow (a short drive) which serves good food, so we recommend booking in advance. There are lots of other good pubs within easy driving distance – you’ll find a list of our favourites on our Eating Out page. However, we recommend you ring anywhere you choose before going, to check they are able to accommodate you.
We offer a range of fun activities for guests so please check our list of Things To Do first! If you’d like to make your own arrangements, we are happy to discuss ideas, but please note that we’ll need to take into consideration any potential disturbance to our other guests, local wildlife, and the daily workings of the farm before making a decision.
