Elinore and her family stayed with us as the Autumn started coming in. They left some wonderful notes of their stay, so we have added a few of their thoughts here. Thank you all! "The tent was deceptively spacious, and also had the huge benefit of a proper flushing toilet. Loved that we could pop the wood burner on to keep warm as the night temperature was starting to drop. It was fantastic to be able to let the children go off exploring (within reason) and not worry about them. It gave them a great sense of independence and the adults 5 minutes peace! The wheelbarrows to carry bits to and from the car were really appreciated, as was the cheats kitchen - 6am cup of tea with the sunrise required a quick boil! Hamper was a fab gesture – children loved the apple juice, so much so the grown-ups didn’t get any! It was so peaceful at night – I loved listening to the wildlife as I fell asleep. Everyone enjoyed sitting around the fire pit toasting marshmallows and making smores. We then enjoyed a night walk – no torches. Saw some bats, heard two owls talking to each other and just loved watching the children realising their eyes easily adjust to the darkness. The gift of a Penheim mug to my daughter for her birthday was incredibly generous and made her feel extra special – thank you."

We've come her four times over the last seven years and so the kids have almost 'grown up' here as they were 2 years and 4 years old when we first came and they are now 9 & 11! We did the Zog trail at Beechenhurst. April 2023
Jo and her family joined us in April for an early season visit. "The tent was absolutely stunning, a really good size for the 4 of us, comfortable beds and so handy to have the ensuite toilet. We absolutely loved the site, and loved how private and magical it felt. It felt really safe with the children and the play park was an added bonus. Everything has been so well thought out and of high quality, the hamper was very yummy too! Our son particularly enjoyed the lambing experience and Helen was absolutely fab at getting him involved at his on pace, he can be slow to warm up but she was so welcoming! The Thompson's were first time visitors and we loved welcoming them to Penhein. What did they like? "Everything! Beautifully furnished, well equipped. Easy to use/find everything. Lovely countryside. Warm, luxury, high end furnishings. Very clean." Amongst the many things they did while they were here were "Lots of walking trails, found some of the geocache boxes, campfires at our pod, played in the play area/swing. The Dugdales heard about us through a friend and decided to come and try us out. We asked them what they liked. "The setting, the luxury of real beds in a tent setting." While they were with us they went on the Sculpture Trail and Go Ape, both in the nearby Forest of Dean. We think their first visit to Penhein went well. "We really enjoyed our family time together at Penhein. Getting back to basics was just what we needed with busy lives at home. We've loved our stay here, just wish we had longer!" The Findlay family really made the most of their stay, including sending the children on one of our bushcraft courses. "A wonderful place for all ages, but particularly children. Takes us back to nature and the kids can roam and let their imaginations run wild. We walked down to the pool, saw a bird of prey land on a branch, had a cricket land on our hand and saw tractors and cows. The kids loved (the bushcraft) and are still talking about it three days later. Our son has also taught us some things about lighting fires responsibly! The site itself is stunningly beautiful, our view was gorgeous and the tent itself was incredibly homely and cosy. The Cheats Kitchen and shower block were so clean and efficient too – it is the best example of glamping that we have ever come across. The app is also really handy and is a great tool to have. We were so excited to welcome Swoop Adventures for their company Team Building outing. They seemed to love it and we loved judging the bug hotels they built for our smaller, many legged visitors! "Can’t praise you guys highly enough. Penhein is a fantastic site with fantastic amenities and a lovely feel. But you went above and beyond to make sure it worked for our slightly crazy group. Helping us organise the activities, the walk, the catering and so on was great – but also the flexibility you showed us during our stay (check-in and checkout, judging our bug hotels and so on) was really appreciated. You understood that it was hard for us to keep everything working for the group, and you really helped us to do so. Many, many thanks."

Matt and family were 'newbies' to Penhein and we asked them what they liked about their stay. Naturally enough we loved the answer! "Practically everything…we didn’t use the cheat’s kitchen other than for charging our phones and the occasional ice cream / map borrow, but it had everything you would need. The shower block was superb, tents excellent, location phenomenal. We just had the most wonderful stay – so much so that Grace was in floods of tears when she got home! Loved the fact that we could just let the kids roam, make friends, whittle sticks, climb trees etc. You’ve done such a great job Helen, it was the perfect blend of comfort and ‘outdoorsyness’ for all of us. 10/10! "We loved our stay at Penhein as always! The site and Alachigh were fantastic as always. I was very happy with the covid protocols and felt safe while we were staying with you. It was lovely to see Helen and was nice to be welcomed so warmly. We think the welcome hamper is a lovely touch. The boys loved the swings and the new swing and play area. I thought the pantry was an excellent addition to the cheats kitchen. We certainly did make use of it, especially the icecreams! And if the weather hadn’t been so kind for cooking on the fire outside in the evenings then I would have definitely purchased some of the meals in the freezer!"

The Bradley family came to stay in early June. They left us some wonderful comments. "It was a truly magical experience staying with you, and our only regret is that we didn't stay on site the whole time we were there to make the most of every moment. The catering facilities and supplies would surely have sustained us!" We asked what they had particularly liked....."The views from the glampsite were spectacular.......the beautiful candlelit bath we were allocated was wonderful, and the best way to end a day of outdoor fun and promote wonderful sleep in the luxurious bedsheets. The lack of electricity was extra special because of the candles, whilst having running water and a loo in our tent made it so convenient. The kitchen was so well equipped with all utensils provided, even a cafetiere. The spacing of the tents was ideal, just close enough together to be sociable, but far enough not to hear anyone else at night. It was glorious opening the door to the meadow in the mornings and sitting around the campfire at night. The younger children would have happily spent all day every day on the adventure playground and swing, but the older ones wanted to venture further.

The setting you have created is so wonderful. We felt like we could truly escape from some of the pressures of normal life. Our yurt backed onto a huge open green which the kids loved exploring. The bench and tyre swings were a big hit. The children loved being there, and slept remarkably well which goes to show how much fun they were having. We would love to come again."

First time Penhein guests Chloe and her family left us a review that took our breath away. Thank you so much! She started of by telling us what she liked about the site. "The attention to detail in the tent and the care that was taken in making it comfortable and convenient (everything from firelighters and kindling to the well-stocked kitchen). The outstanding beauty of the surroundings and the opportunity to walk/ play directly from the campsite. The Pantry is an excellent idea and the kids especially enjoyed the marshmallows and ice-creams. We also liked the hands-off approach to staffing: we knew how to find people if we needed them, but we didn’t feel supervised on site. We booked bushcraft for the kids. They absolutely loved it and asked if they could go again the next day. Our outdoor holidays are usually in our own tent; Penhein may have spoiled us for camping, not least the wonderful woodburner which makes a pleasure of chilly evenings and mornings. The luxury and comfort of the tents, the many attractions on site and the glorious surroundings of the estate meant that none of us were ready to leave after three days. We’ve stayed on many campsites (and a few glampsites) and we’ve never seen it done as well as this. This is glamping and hospitality at its best. I’m sure we’re not the only people to have begun booking our return visit on the journey home."

One our most popular children's activities is our Junior Bushcraft. A fun way to learn survival skills and give mums and dads a few hours off (!) the children learn about – and have a go at – building different shelters and lighting fires without matches (multiple different ways) in the woods at Penhein farm. A great way to experience what nature has to offer. Eric and his family came for their first stay with us and we think his comment sums it up. "My daughter came back with a huge smile on her face and said she LOVED it! It was certainly good value".

Sarah and her family joined us just before the Welsh lockdown looking for some peace and quiet. We are so pleased that it sounds as if they found it. "We did the walk up to the top of the wood overlooking the Severn and vista below. Managed to fly the kites in the meadow and toast marshmallows before the rain arrived early hours of Wed morning. We felt blessed and only wished we had booked a few extra nights. The staff were very friendly too and it was great to walk through such a lovely well managed estate and see the herd of beef cattle you have there…. made me feel at home! We loved the seclusion and the showerblock “was like a hotel” according to my youngest".

In these extraordinary times we have all felt a huge sense of gratitude to our keyworkers, so it was particularly special for us to hear from Katrina and her friends. "Two of our group are super outdoorsie and love camping whereas the 3rd person isn't so keen, so this was an amazing middle ground. We had a wonderful time! Thank you for everything especially in these very uncertain times. We felt that we could relax and not have to worry, which is what we all desperately needed being key workers! Thank you, thank you, a million times thank you!" She then wrote a list of what they all loved about Penhein. We were overwhelmed by what they said. "• The tent was so well equipped • The ensuite • The showers were AMAZING • We loved cooking on the camp fire and the wood burner • But being able to run up to the cheats kitchen and boil a kettle in the morning was great! • Being able to explore the grounds of the farm • The fact the fire wood was unlimited and not an extra charge • Hosts were exceptionally friendly and helpful • The Penhein App was incredibly helpful! • The Coffee! • Walking Walking and more walking!"

Particularly the monsoon shower, the rope swings, the kids playground and the Pantry – and the ability to have items from the Pantry delivered to our tent ready for our arrival. And especially the ensuite flushing loo. It seemed like you’d thought of everything, which made our stay even more enjoyable and stress-free. And while the site was full during our stay there was so much space onsite that at times it felt as though we had the place to ourselves. Oh and THAT VIEW of the Severn from the wildflower meadow. Lovely!"

It’s very compact but big enough for adventures and to feel safe. The tent is gorgeous and very comfortable. The Cheat’s Kitchen was much needed and saved us with a 2 year old! Thank you so much. We were excited to host a wedding with a truly international flavour. Aske was one of our guests. "Hello. I would like to offer my most favorable feedback. The beds were soft... the tents were incredibly cozy..... the bathrooms were clean and nice, both in the communal and in my tent. The roads were covered in wood shavings so it didn't get muddy, which was a godsend when I had to go last-minute hunting for bobby pins on the wedding day in my fancy shoes. The cheats kitchen was really nice for getting a cup of coffee in the morning, and the bath was BIG and deep and had a bunch of candles ready to light. The communal tent was nice and big enough for all 20-something of us on the last day...for an evening of board games. In short, great place, great wedding, thank you for hosting us......"

Our stay was perfect from beginning to end- we had to drag our children away from the tyre swing! The pods are luxurious & provide everything you need. The beds were extremely comfortable & the linen crisp & white. Helen & James were very welcoming & friendly - nothing was too much trouble. We all enjoyed the Halloween activities. The whole place is absolutely magical from the winding paths to the amazing Yurts and the home-made food we had delivered to our Yurt. If I had to choose one thing it would be the amazing sense of peace you feel the moment you arrive. Oh, and the fantastic James who made us feel so welcome. I would recommend everything! From a midnight camp fire to a good old walk in the most beautiful grounds. Put your boots on, you're going to love it! If you would like to truly experience all Penhein has to offer get stuck in, order food, go shooting, meet everyone. I can guarantee the memories you make will last forever. This place is absolutely outstanding."

It was a surprise trip away for my boyfriend who missed camping (which we used to do a lot of when we lived in Vancouver Island) and I felt that it really allowed us/him to truly escape the city and feel nostaligic of our time in the US."

The tents are very special and the little touches with the flowers and the welcome packs made it very personal. Your coffee in particular was delicious and I’m sad I forgot to buy some more before I left! The shower block is also lovely, what a luxury! Camping will never be the same again. James, thank you for all of your help whilst we were there. The treasure hunt in particular was a highlight for everyone. A magical experience, with indulgent luxury..... March 2015
Melanie and family joined us in March 2015 "We just wanted to thank you for a lovely couple of days at Penhein, for allowing us to turn up early despite it causing you extra work and for your care and attention to detail. It was truly glorious and we had a great time. You really have thought of everything and there were some lovely touches – the welcome hamper (soon disappeared), the tea light chandelier, the lovely cosy bed, the cheat’s kitchen (for when we hadn’t yet got the fire going) plenty of wood and of course the wood stove AND the fire pit. The living space in the alcachigh was great – there was more than enough room and a nice setting out of the different spaces. The inside loo was also a welcome bonus! The shower block was beautifully done out too: underfloor heating, fabulously big showers with enough space to change and to not get your clothes wet, and the roll top bath was of course a very indulgent luxury which we made use of. It all made for a magical experience with indulgent luxury and peace and quiet. You can’t get better than that."

Kim came to Penhein in March 2015 "I would highly recommend Penhein to any group of friends, families or even a romantic break. It's the perfect setting with comfy beds, kitchen facilities, flushing loos in every tent and even a camping-luxe shower block, it's ideal for those not too prepared to full-on-camp. Prior to our stay I was liaising with Helen who was very responsive and accommodating. I had arranged for an Ocado and Waitrose delivery to the site during our weekend and Helen was extremely helpful by even offering her contact should the driver get lost. James met us upon arrival and gave us a thorough induction on the site and a quick tutorial on how to get a fire started. Extremely useful! We had hired out the stone barn for the evening which James and Helen had set out perfectly. Nothing was too much trouble for them. At only 140 miles from west London it is a great location for a weekend break away from the city. I will be definitely returning to Penhein"
