Culinary Adventures

Cooking at Penhein

Cook up a storm on the wood-burning stove, go rustic over the fire pit, or keep it civilised in the Cheat’s Kitchen – at Penhein, we cater for all levels of culinary adventure.

Wild cooking

Penhein is a self-catering holiday like no other, and cooking at Penhein is an easy option, with a wood-burning stove in every tent and a fire pit on every doorstep. Not only does the stove keep your tent toasty, you can also use it to make breakfast – from boiling the kettle for your morning cuppa to frying up a full English. Heat soup in a pan, cook pasta or rice, steam greens, or slow-cook a stew, the choice is endless. Outside, the fire pit is excellent for barbecuing meat, baking potatoes and, of course, toasting marshmallows (a rite of passage for any happy camper). In our communal areas you will also see larger, locally made (using British steel) firepits supplied by our friends at Fire Pits UK. With their unique BBQ swing arm, they make wood-fired cooking even easier and have drawn praise from chefs such as James Strawbridge and Tom Kerridge. Once the cooking is finished the swing arm can be removed and the ember-gazing can stretch long into the night.

Not so wild cooking

If the fire pit doesn’t behave and all else fails, there’s a communal cooking area known as the ‘Cheat’s Kitchen’ equipped with familiar mod-cons like a toaster, hob, electric kettle and microwave. We also offer professional catering options from superb local suppliers. Fantastic for groups and special events, there’s everything from a cocktail bar on wheels to hog roasts and pizzas served hot from a wood-fired oven.

On the menu

If you are cooking at Penhein, in your tent you’ll find all the kitchen essentials (salt, pepper, olive oil, etc.), plus a few special ingredients to set your barbecue off with a bang (see What’s Included). Our on-site Pantry stocks a range of locally-sourced food and drink, including pre-prepared meals for a quick and easy supper, as well as homemade cakes and honey from our own bees.

You can also order your own supermarket shop to arrive at Penhein at the same time you do. Most of the big supermarkets have branches in the area and know us well, so arranging a delivery is easy.
