Analogue Evenings at Penhein: The Gentle Joy of Slowing Down

May 30, 2025

Life. So often a busy mess of rushing, running and reacting. Is there anyone that doesn’t occasionally wish for peace and quiet, an off grid moment to recalibrate? That’s one of the charms here at Penhein. You won’t find a Wi-Fi signal or a glowing TV screen, no car horns, traffic noise, phones beeping or computer games playing. What you’ll find instead is a quiet rebellion against a world that’s always ‘on’. The chance to swap screen time for stories, notifications for night skies, and scrolling for stargazing. The chance to enjoy the timeless nightly ritual of gathering as the sun goes down.

We like to call these analogue evenings.

Being ‘off grid’ means our guests get to truly switch off. There’s no FOMO here. In its place are slow evenings by the fire, giggling card games with your children, marshmallows on sticks, warm mugs in hand and the sheer delight of having absolutely nowhere else to be.

The Soundtrack of Slowness

Once you let go of digital noise, unpack, relax and let your mind wander, something extraordinary can happen – you begin to hear the world again. Not the world of emails or engines or urgent pings – but the real, living world that rustles just beyond the canvas of Penhein’s alachighs (tents).

At Penhein, evening arrives with a different kind of playlist; the crackle of firewood, the clink of enamel mugs filled with hot chocolate (or something stronger…our favourite local meadery is Hivemind!), the laughter of children playing, the call of owls from the treetops and birds settling in for the night, the whisper of wind in the trees, rustling from leaf to leaf, hedgehogs out for nightly adventures.

When the Lights Go Out

We’ve heard the feedback time and again: once the mind has a chance to slow down, the imagination flares up in its place. Suddenly, games emerge from nothing—sticks become wands, logs become pirate ships, tents transform into secret dens. Even grown-ups remember how to play. Whether it’s a fiercely competitive round of Uno or a quiet moment with a book by lantern light, everyone seems to find their rhythm again.

When the stars come out (and oh, do they shine here!), there’s little more to do than sit back, tuck under a blanket and wonder why we ever needed anything more than this. For a guided exploration of the constellations why not try some  stargazing? Penhein is in a Dark Skies Wales area and you can book a session with an expert instructor from Dark Sky Wales.

For Grown-Ups Too

Of course, it’s not just for children. In fact, we think grown-ups might love analogue evenings even more. After all, how often do we get a chance to switch off properly, without interruption or distraction?

Here, you might open a bottle of local cider (check out Apple County Cider for instance) and settle in with a few hands of cards by the fire. Or sit in companionable silence with a friend, watching the flames dance and let the stillness do the talking.

There’s something rather lovely about journalling by lamplight – letting your thoughts spill out slowly, unbothered by time passing. If you’ve got a hobby that’s been quietly waiting for your attention, this is the perfect place to bring it back to life. We’ve even heard of guests knitting socks and hats, others bringing along sketchbooks or watercolours, rediscovering the joy of drawing just for themselves. Or if you’re yet to find your thing, an analogue evening might be just the place to begin.

Gather, Glow, Repeat

There’s no pressure to make it magical—it already is. The joy of an analogue evening isn’t in crafting perfect memories, but in letting the night unfold on its own gentle terms.

So light a fire. Pour something warming. Let the children stay up late. Let yourself stay up late. Talk until the fire goes out or retreat to bed early with the soft scent of woodsmoke in your hair and a belly full of one-too-many toasted marshmallows.

At Penhein, these are the memories that linger, packed full of good feelings.
