Spend a morning in the beautiful surroundings of Dewstow Gardens and Grottoes before enjoying a relaxing lunch at The Millers Arms nearby and finishing with a visit to Caldicot Castle. The perfect day for fine weather.
“This was a garden, the like of which is not known to exist anywhere else”. Imagine discovering a lost garden with tunnels and underground grottoes buried under thousands of tonnes of soil for over 50 years. That’s what happened at Dewstow gardens and they have been, and still are being, lovingly restored to all their original glory. Spend some time in these glorious gardens, wandering above and below ground in amongst the grottoes and tunnels
There is a small cafe at Dewstow or you can travel for a few miles and have a good value pub lunch at The Millers Arms in Mathern.
To finish your day visit Caldicot Castle and its idyllic 55 acre Country Park. Once there you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Castle’s exciting past. The castle was developed as a fortress in the Middle Ages and restored as a Victorian family home. The river Nedern winds its way through the park and the wildlife pond is home to a variety of wildfowl. You can explore the medieval towers and take in the views of the parklands and surrounding area from the battlements. You can unravel the mysteries of the dark chilling castle dungeon and try to spot one of the castle’s many reputed ghosts.
