Tips and Tricks for Creating the Perfect Woodland Wedding

May 9, 2025

There’s something undeniably enchanting about a woodland wedding. Maybe it’s the dappled sunlight through the trees, the rich scent of nature in the air or the soft hush that settles when you step off the beaten path. Whatever it is, it’s no wonder more couples are choosing to swap traditional venues for something a little more wild—and a lot more wonderful.

At Penhein, we’ve been lucky enough to host some truly beautiful woodland wedding celebrations, and over the years we’ve picked up a few helpful tricks. So, if you’re dreaming of tying the knot among the trees, here’s our guide to getting it just right.

1. Start with the Setting

Woodland weddings are all about atmosphere—and the right setting does half the work for you. Look for a space that feels secluded but still accessible. You’ll want natural beauty, of course, but also somewhere that offers a bit of practical magic: flat ground for chairs, shade for summer days, and ideally, a little shelter available in case the weather decides to join in the festivities.

Ceremonies in a woodland setting often work best earlier in the day, when the woods are brighter, with celebrations flowing into an early evening meal at golden hour followed by cosy fire pit conversations and dancing under the stars.

2. Work With Nature, Not Against It

Woodland settings can change dramatically throughout the year. Visit your chosen location at the same time of year as your planned wedding date to check light levels, ground conditions, and general atmosphere. Rain? Mud? Golden light through the trees? It all helps to plan. But don’t forget to make room for plan B. Even in midsummer, woodland weddings can be unpredictable, but that’s half the charm. Consider these weather-friendly additions:

  • A marquee, yurt or stretch tent as backup
  • Hardstanding or matting for high-traffic paths
  • Blankets or shawls in cooler weather
  • Parasols, hand fans and water stations in the summer
  • Natural insect repellent sprays or citronella candles placed in fire safe areas

3. Dress for the Outdoors

Heels and forests rarely mix, so plan your outfits with the setting in mind and let your guests know what to expect. Mix practicality with flare. Does your wedding have a theme? Suggest a dress code such as rustic chic or countryside smart, with smart but sturdy shoes and layers (lots of layers!). Help guests prepare ahead of time with an up-to-date weather forecast.

4. Feed Your Guests Well

There’s something wonderfully informal about woodland weddings. Whatever your preference, make the food hearty, seasonal, and shared.

Some great ideas include:

  • Canapes, grazing tables and share platters
  • Food trucks, BBQs or wood-fired pizzas
  • Afternoon tea-style picnic hampers
  • Local, seasonal sit-down feasts

For drinks, think local ciders or wines, fizz on ice or seasonal cordials for toasting. It’s also worth thinking about late-night snacks (yes, you will want pizza and toasted marshmallows by 10pm!)

5. Choosing the Right Entertainment

Be mindful of noise restrictions and neighbours—then lean into it. Acoustic musicians, string quartets, folk bands or even silent discos work beautifully in woodland spaces.

6. Focus on Natural, Low-Impact Décor

A little planning goes a long way. Let nature take the lead and build your day around what’s already there. Think seasonal flowers, soft fabrics that move with the breeze and decorations that blend rather than shout.

Here are a few lovely ideas we’ve seen:

  • Hanging lanterns or fairy lights strung between trees
  • A natural aisle made from logs, petals or woven rugs
  • Hand-tied bouquets of seasonal wildflowers, grasses, potted herbs or house plants
  • Wooden signage and biodegradable confetti (we’re big fans of dried petals)
  • Avoid plastic or glitter, and check for any local rules about what’s allowed on-site

7. Power and Facilities

Even the wildest weddings need a few creature comforts. They might not be glamorous, but they’re crucial for a smooth event.

  • Hire a generator for lighting, music and catering equipment
  • Consider solar or battery-powered lighting for eco-friendly touches
  • Check what facilities are available on site. If necessary, rent luxury loos or compost toilets
  • Provide hand-washing stations and recycling bins to keep things clean

8. Stay a While

One of the biggest perks of a woodland wedding is the chance to turn it into a few days’ stay. With everyone staying close by, the pace slows down and the fun only stops when you’re ready. There’s time for a big breakfast the morning after, with coffee around the fire pit and proper goodbyes.

Finally, don’t be afraid to do things your way. Whether planning an intimate elopement or a festival-style wedding with live music and barefoot dancing, build a day that reflects you.

Some of the most memorable moments could be the least traditional: candlelit ceremonies, tree-planting rituals, poetry readings, and cupcakes instead of cake. There are no rules – just the woods, your people and the space to celebrate love freely and beautifully.

9. Woodland & Micro Wedding Celebrations at Penhein

wedding

If a woodland wedding or intimate micro celebration sounds like your perfect day, Penhein might just be the place to bring it all to life. Tucked away in the peaceful Monmouthshire countryside, our private glampsite offers something truly unique—a secluded woodland setting best suited for up to 50-60 guests (although we can accommodate a few more for a small additional charge if needed).

We’re a fully licensed wedding venue, which means you can legally tie the knot right here beneath the trees. Whether you’re planning a laid-back elopement, a vow renewal or a few days’ celebrating with family and friends, we provide a magical backdrop and the freedom to make it your own.

Our approach is simple: you hire the site, and then the rest is yours to curate. Choose your own suppliers, decorate however you like and create the celebration that feels right for you. There’s no need to book a marquee or worry about accommodation; Chehel Sotoun (our beautiful open-sided stretch tent) and Petro (our versatile indoor communal tent) are included in the package, as are the fully furnished glamping tents with proper beds, en suite loos and wood-burning stoves.

You’re welcome to bring in caterers, stylists, florists, and musicians—or keep things simple and DIY. There’s no corkage fee and no strict schedules – just a can-do attitude, gorgeous scenery and the space to celebrate exactly how you’d like.
