What's New at Penhein

Summer Adventures at Penhein!

May 8, 2024

Penhein in the summer is a sight to behold. Gloriously green, stunning views from almost any point, an abundance of nature at your feet, at your doorstep and in the sky – and the base for some family holiday adventures you will never forget!

We have over 26 bookable adventures here at Penhein (and lots that you don’t need to book at all!) and there is yet more to do in the nearby Wye Valley and Forest of Dean, so our guests are spoilt for choice. In fact, we think that we can pretty well guarantee that there will be something for everyone who comes to stay here. So we thought it might be useful to list just a few ideas from the many that are available, and you can see a full list here if we have whetted your appetite!

1. Bushcraft

Junior Bushcraft campfire bread bushcraft

We offer three versions of bushcraft, which in any guise is one of the most popular of our activies. Send the children off for Junior Bushcraft, or grab the chance for yourselves with Adult Bushcraft or simply join forces and set of for a session as a family! Our ex-military instructors will help you make shelters, build fires (and show you how to light them multiple ways, without matches), forage some goodies and bake bread and heat some drinks over the fire you have made.

If you are a larger group of adults who are may be a little extra adventurous, why not test your mettle in our own Bush Tucker trials? Would you like to be crowned king or queen of the woodland? Designed as a follow on from the adult bushcraft course, think ‘I’m a Celebrity’ but without the TV crew. This fun competition gives you the chance to see how daring you can be, trying a variety of creepy crawlies and insects and guessing what they are whilst blindfolded!

2. Throw a Pot, or Two

Go potty at Penhein, and try your hand at throwing your own pots in a creative pottery wheel class run by the fabulous Melanie Van de Velde! Melanie (from the wonderfully titled Melanie Made Mud) will bring enough wheels for everyone to have the use of one to learn how to centre clay and throw a pot. With five beautiful glaze colours to choose from you will be able to throw up to 4 pots each. Book now to give it a try!

3. Watersports

Things to do  outdoor games

Whilst you can paddle at Penhein, if you really want to get out on the water then The River Wye in the Wye Valley, or perhaps Llandegfedd Lakes may be the place for you. Between them they offer wild swimming, kayaking, canoeing, standup paddleboarding, sailing and a bit more!

4. Archery

If you would prefer to keep your feet on the ground then why not try your hand at archery? The wonderful team from Wye Valley Archery offer courses at Penhein and we are thrilled to welcome them. They cater for all standards, so if you want to try it out, here is the perfect opportunity. By the way, aside from being a great hobby and hugely enjoyable, archery boasts a lot of health benefits too! These include keeping your mind sharp and improving your upper body strength, so you can have fun and improve your health, what’s not to like?

5. Mini Adventurers Club

Even on a family holiday it is nice for parents and children to have their own time and space for a while! So here we are with our own Mini Adventurers Club – 2 ½ hours of perfect peace for parents and exciting adventures for children. Children will be taken on a variety of nature based activities including a fabulous fairy walk, with a magical story to listen to as they go, bug hunts with a magnifying glass, twig frame building, mud pie nature cooking, scavenger hunting and making leaf collages to name but a few, all adapted to be age appropriate. Each session will include a healthy snack and a fruit juice to keep the intrepid explorers going.

6. Just Play!

adventure outdoor adventure

It’s all very well organising a fabulous day out, and it is a wonderful way to be together as a family, but we also cater for the young free roamers, the explorers and the I want to make new frienders. Penhein is a natural playground in itself. Perfect for children of all ages. There is a stream for Pooh Sticks, our own naturual playground in the centre of the glampsite and a Bird and Deer Hide in the middle of the farm so they can try their hand at a mini natural safari. We also offer activity packs, one called the Young Explorers Pack for children up to 8 years and the Penhein Wildlife Challenge for those of 9 or over. There’s even a games box in Petro, one of our communal areas, full of equipment for a variety outdoor sports (we have put up our goal posts, so even football is on the menu!)…

What can we say? Penhein is the perfect place for children to wander freely and explore the countryside in a safe, and beautiful, natural environment so come and join us for a great summer holiday!
