Staycation, Staycation, Staycation! Six good reasons for holidaying in the UK (and Penhein is one of them!)

March 9, 2025

Did you know that Staycations have actually been around since the time of the second World War. It turns out that the word can be traced back to 1944, when an advert for beer encouraged readers to help the war effort by, amongst other things, taking a Stay-cation instead of a Va-cation. Well, good ideas last a long time and the more modern version of a staycation is still very much with us, and for good reason. In fact here are six of them….

1. Affordability

Staycations are often more budget-friendly and require less travel time compared to international trips, making them a convenient (and much less stressful) option for many. Staycations are more affordable than traveling abroad because you don’t need to pay for flights, booking fees, airport transfers, local tourist taxes etc. They are also ideal for short breaks, so if you wanted to you could take a staycation and still go abroad for a longer holiday during the summer.

2. Convenience

A staycation is something that can be planned at very short notice. Think you need a break? Then get in the car and go. There are so many places in the UK that offer wonderful short breaks, often within only an hour or two from your home. For example, Penhein Glamping is tucked away in the stunning Monmouthhire countryside, just over the English/Welsh border. Easily reached by car or train, we regularly welcome guests from as close as Cardiff, Bristol or London and then as far as Manchester and beyond, with many making the journey from Norfolk or even Scotland. Pick your travel times, pack the suitcase, fill the car and off you go to wherever the fancy takes you.

3. Sustainability

lambs

Staycations are undoubtedly a greener way to get away. It’s no secret that air travel puts a lot of strain on the environment. Travelling within the UK is much better for the environment than travelling abroad, and you can still enjoy exploring new places and new scenery, boosting local economies and helping small local businesses.

At Penhein we take our own sustainability, our green life if you will, very seriously. Our “hyper-local” approach is focused on farm-reared produce, soil-loving biodiversity initiatives and “closed-loop systems” (meaning “waste products” from one organism become nutrients for another), essentially creating a self-sustaining system. Working with nature to minimise waste and to sustain the land, we strive to have the least enviromental impact possible.

4. Discovery

Staycations allow you to discover nearby places you might not have otherwise visited, like parks, museums, and restaurants. There are also usually a wonderful range of local adventures nearby, with things like zipwires, beaches, rivers and castles to explore, offering some wonderfully diverse experiences.  A really good staycation doesn’t mean sacrificing the fun, comfort, or adventure of any other holiday. In fact you could have more of it all!

5. Rest and Relaxation (and family time)

adventure

Staycations are a great way to relax and recharge. It can often take a good few days to get over the stress and tiredness of international travel. With a staycation, you will start feeling the benefit so  much sooner without having to deal with the stress of busy travel options, particularly flying. It means more time with family actually holidaying rather than travelling.

6. Penhein Glamping, a Staycation like no other..
