September 21, 2018
Autumn is here and now that we’re settled back into the school rhythm we’re fully embracing the new season. In the woodlands around Penhein the colours are changing and our little boys are loving the outdoors, collecting conkers and charging about through the crunchy leaves. For parents, our eyes are already focused on half term. It’s the perfect time of year to book a short break as a family; pack your wellies and escape for a few days of fresh air and country walks as well as toasty evenings in your spacious alachigh tent with its own roaring wood burner.
As well as all our usual activities for families, we’ve lined up a few extra events especially for children this half term. Join a creative printing workshop, make a spooky lantern for our Halloween party or build a Guy Fawkes to burn on the bonfire at our Penhein Fireworks Night. These fun sessions, hosted in Petro our cosy communal tent, are a great way for children to make friends as well as giving adults a bit of a break! Here’s what’s on:
Children’s Block and Mono Printing Workshop
The children can get crafty this half term with a fun printing workshop at Penhein with Rachel Cadman, professional artist and printing tutor. They will discover a variety of printing methods, including block and mono printing, and maybe find inspiration from the autumn leaves, the landscape of the Monmouthshire hills or the domed curve of an alachigh tent. Whatever the design, each child will make a lovely picture, notebook or set of cards to take home as a memory of their stay at Penhein. The prints will also contribute to our giant and magical Penhein tree collage! This cosy, creative morning is also a great way for all the children to get together and make friends, allowing the grown-ups a morning to themselves.
Details: Children’s Printing Workshop, Sunday 21 October, running time 2.5-3 hours. Ages up to 16 welcome, but under 7’s must be accompanied by an adult. £25 per child, all materials included. Meet in Petro, our communal tent at 10am. Book a stay this October here.
Penhein Halloween Party
Calling all ghoulish ghosts, wicked witches, and thirsty vampires! Get ready for the ultimate Halloween party at Penhein this half term. As well as our annual fancy dress competition, we’ll be running a new lantern-making workshop for all ages at 2pm in Petro. Come along and get to know each other whilst creating a paper cut-out design for your very own Halloween lantern. At 5pm we’ll meet again – this time in our spooky guises ready for a procession through the woodland by the light of our lanterns, stopping along the way for a bit of trick or treating glamping style! Then it’s time for the judging panel to decide the winner of the fancy dress competition – with a prize for the most inventive costume. Finally, gather round the campfire for hot dogs, hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows as we share our spookiest ghost stories.
Details: Tuesday 30 October, lantern workshop 2pm, costume procession and trick or treating at 5pm before hot dogs round the camp fire at 6pm. All ages welcome. Included in the price of your stay which can be booked here.
Bonfire Night Fun
It’s the final weekend of the season at Penhein and we’re going out with a bang! On Saturday evening we’re hosting a private fireworks display for our guests and, with no-one for miles around, we’ve got the skies completely to ourselves. But the fun starts before then with our Guy Fawkes competition. Join us in Petro at 2pm to make your own Guy for the bonfire – the winner gets top spot on the stack as we set the bonfire alight. We’ll supply all the necessary materials for making your Guy…just don’t get too attached to the poor fellow…
At 5.30pm we’ll be judging the Guy Fawkes competition before the bonfire is lit at 5.45pm. At 6.15pm light a sparkler and watch a fireworks display lighting up the night sky. Afterwards there’ll be a BBQ and we’ll be serving up hot dogs with sausages from the local butcher, as well as toffee apples, hot chocolate and mulled wine for the grown-ups. We can’t think of a better way to toast the end of half term as a family.
Details: Saturday 3 November, 2pm Guy Fawkes making in Petro. Judging at 5.30pm, bonfire lit at 5.45pm, fireworks 6.15pm, BBQ from 6.45pm. All ages welcome. Included in the price of your stay which can be booked here.
