Family Fun at Penhein Glamping: Summer Holidays 2019

June 9, 2019

The summer holidays will soon be upon us, with weeks stretching out until September and little faces asking ‘what are we doing today?’ Why not come and spend some time at Penhein where we’ve got heaps of awesome activities for all ages that can be pre-booked ahead of your stay. As a boutique glampsite, we’ve hand-picked the programme with our guests in mind, and all our activities are run by experts in their field – think Bushcraft with army pro’s, clay pigeon shooting with a GB Champion, printing workshops with a renowned local artist, foraging with an award-winning author on the subject, wine tasting with a Master of Wine. Whatever your interests, there’s something for you and whilst minimum numbers do apply, if you’re interested in any of the activities just let us know and we’ll see if we can build a group for you. Here’s a taster of what you can book this summer:

Fun for all the Family at Penhein

We know your holiday time as a family is precious so spend it having fun together. Book a Forage and Feast workshop and go out into the wilds with local expert, Adele Nozedar and hunt out edible herbs and plants before returning to base camp to cook up a feast over the campfire to share together. Creative hands can get crafty with our new Willow Weaving courses where you can make a mini basket, willow stars and hearts or a bird feeder. Or if you’ve got a competitive bunch, team up for our Penhein Treasure Hunt which takes you all over the estate – the winner takes all!

Drop-off Activities for Children

Holidays at Penhein are all about slowing down and stopping to enjoy the simple things in life; sipping a cup of coffee in the sun, listening to the dawn chorus as you wake up, noticing the dappled sunshine through the leaves. Enjoy it all in peace with one of our child-friendly workshops like Bushcraft, Wild Cookery or Printing. Drop your children off in the morning and you’ll have a few hours to yourself whilst knowing that they’re having a great time. Book a massage, relax with a book or just lie on a rug and switch off.

Bonding Activities for Teens

Clay pigeon shooting has proved so popular with our teenage guests – book a session and spend some proper time together. For ages 13+ it’s a great activity to do in a smaller group (minimum four people). Learn how to shoot clays and then have a competition as to who can shoot the most! Run by GB Champion,  Nigel Hart you’ll be learning off a true expert. Also for ages 12+, there’s The Wire, a zip wire at the National Diving & Activity Centre in Chepstow that’s one of the longest and fastest in the UK, and sends you zooming 700m over a spectacular quarry. We dare you!

Activities in the Area

We spent a happy Sunday recently canoeing along the River Wye and can personally recommend Monmouth Canoe – a fantastic local company who arrange the day impeccably for families. They’ll transport you and the canoes to your chosen start location and meet you at the end of the trip so you can canoe with the flow. Spot the ducks and baby goslings, paddle past castles, stop for a picnic and soak in the stunning scenery. Half-day and full-day options are available for families with children aged 4+, life-jackets and all the kit is provided.

Local Events close to Penhein

Monmouthshire gets really lively during the summer months, and there are farmers’ markets, fairs, music concerts and more to explore. Meet a real Welsh dragon at Chepstow Castle from 1st-14thAugust, where Dare to Meet the Dragon will be appearing with an enormous beast with reptile-scales and flaring nostrils that fire smoke. Meet him if you dare! There’s silliness and fun with The Big Fat Circus Day which rolls into Abergavenny on 26 July with all the fun of the fair; acrobatics, freaks and uniques, coconut shys, races, fancy dress and more. And there’s the Chepstow Show on 10th August – a celebration of the local community and its rural trades, talents and tastes – it’s a great family day out.

There’s so much more besides, we haven’t even mentioned GoApe, mountain biking, caving, wine tasting, Dean Forest Railway…the list goes on! If you want to read more you can find all the details about Things to Do during your stay at Penhein here. Happy holidays!
